Gun Milan Process for Marriage

Guna Milan, also known as Ashtakoota Milan, is a traditional Vedic method used to assess marriage compatibility. In this process, eight important factors of both partners’ birth charts are compared—“Ashta” meaning eight and “Koota” meaning categories. Each koota contributes a certain number of points, and together they form a score out of 36. A higher score indicates better emotional, mental, and spiritual alignment between the couple. Below are the eight kootas explained in a more detailed yet easy-to-read format:

1. Varna (Spiritual Alignment) Varna measures the spiritual outlook and ego balance between the partners. It groups individuals into four categories—Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra—to understand their spiritual compatibility and leadership tendencies.

2. Vashya (Mutual Influence) Vashya helps identify how the partners may influence or respond to each other in a marriage. It categorizes individuals as Manav (human), Vanchar (wild animals), Chatushpad (quadrupeds), Jalchar (aquatic beings), and Keeta/Keet (insects), symbolizing their nature and level of dominance or cooperation.

3. Tara (Star Compatibility) Tara evaluates how harmonious the couple’s Nakshatras (birth stars) are. This factor plays a significant role in determining the well-being, luck, and longevity of the relationship.

4. Yoni (Physical & Emotional Compatibility) Yoni represents the couple’s emotional and intimate compatibility. It is classified into 14 symbolic animal types, such as Horse, Elephant, Snake, Lion, Dog, Cat, and others—each reflecting a distinct behavioral and emotional nature.

5. Graha Maitri (Intellectual Connection) Graha Maitri highlights the mental harmony between partners by analyzing the friendship and relationship between their ruling planets. It indicates how well the couple can communicate, understand, and support each other intellectually.

6. Gana (Temperament Match) Gana assesses the natural temperament and personality traits of both individuals. Based on their Nakshatras, people are grouped into Deva (gentle), Manava (balanced), and Rakshasa (energetic or intense). This factor is important for day-to-day compatibility.

7. Bhakoot (Emotional Stability & Prosperity) Bhakoot focuses on harmony, emotional stability, and prosperity within the marriage. It is based on the relationship between the Moon signs of both partners and indicates how supportive and balanced the overall bond is likely to be.

8. Nadi (Health & Genetic Compatibility) Nadi examines physical well-being and genetic compatibility to ensure a healthy future for the couple. It is divided into three types—Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), and Antya (Kapha)—each relating to different bodily constitutions.
